Fifteen Cheapest Cars to Own

Last time the Auto Info Blog looked at the Top Five Budget Performance Cars for drivers looking for a high-performance vehicle without the strenuous sticker price. This guide is ideal for the new car buyer that is interested in a car with a good bang for the buck; but what about drivers that are just looking for something affordable and sustainable in the long haul? In addition to the car’s initial cost, you’ll have to pay for several other bills throughout your vehicle’s life:
- Insurance. The sportier the car, the more your insurance company is going to gouge you. Also, new cars have notoriously higher insurance rates than cars that are a few years old.
- Fuel. A Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 averages $14,123 for fuel over five years. A Toyota Yaris, on the other hand, is only going to cost $4,927 on average for fuel over five years.
- Maintenance. A Mazda RX-8’s rotary engine will consume far more oil than a Honda Civic. Finding out how often a car requires maintenance can help determine it’s yearly extra costs.
- Larger repairs. How many miles is the car in question known to go for until it needs a larger repair? Do you plan on keeping your car for 50,000 miles, 100,000 miles, or 200,000 miles?
AOL News looked at the 15 cheapest cars to own for the long haul. Here’s the results:
- Nissan Versa. With an MSRP of $9990, you’re starting off affordable right from the get-go. Combine that with excellent gas mileage and stellar insurance rates and you have a thumbs up for the frugal driver.
- Toyota Yaris. AOL News quotes it as, “one of the most fuel efficient cars in America” and “one of the lowest to repair.”
- Hyundai Accent. This is the lowest priced car in the United States, at $9970. It lacks AC though, so watch out if you’re in a hotter state. It also depreciates in it’s already-low value relatively quickly.
- Kia Rio
- Chevy Aveo
- Ford Focus
- Honda Fit
- Mitsubishi Lancer
- Toyota Corolla
- Chevrolet Cobalt
- Scion xD
- Kia Spectra
